10 Things You May Not Know About Physical Therapy

Most people know that a physical therapist and how they manage patient care is somewhere between a medical doctor, nutritionist, and a personal trainer. Here are some facts that set our physical therapists apart!

  1. Physical therapists can work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, nursing homes, and like AHP, private practices.
  2. In addition to working in different settings, there are many different types of physical therapists. Our physical therapy team specializes in orthopedic, acute and chronic injuries, and pre and/or post-operative care.
  3. PT can treat more things than just muscle and joint pain. Did you know physical therapy can treat vertigo? Or headaches? Our team of dedicated, expert physical therapists can meet with you for a consult to discuss any problems or health concerns you have to determine how they can be most helpful.
  4. Physical therapists hold advanced medical degrees. All of our physical therapists and physical therapy assistants have passed extensive medical board exams through the state of Connecticut in order to obtain and hold their license to treat patients.
  5. In most cases, you do not need to have a referral from your primary care doctor or any other physician to begin a physical therapy treatment program. Our fantastic front desk team at AHP is happy to contact your insurance on your behalf to find out the details of your coverage for PT. Call us with your insurance information [203] 847-4477 and our team will call you with the details of your coverage.
  6. It takes teamwork! Our physical therapists alone cannot diminish your symptoms. PT is successful when you work in tandem with our physical therapists. We need your commitment to keep your PT appointments and to come in ready to work. We also need your constant communication and input so we know how you are feeling, how you are progressing and what changes we may need to make to optimize your treatment plan. Your PT program will be constantly evolving to meet your needs.
  7. If you tell our physical therapist an exercise is easy, we're most likely going to make it harder. It's not that we're being mean. Harder is a good thing! Harder means you are healing! Harder means you are getting stronger! That is good. But on the other side, if we give you an exercise either in our gym or at home and you find it is too hard to do or you have pain, our physical therapists will help you to make it easier and to ensure that you can do the exercises you need to get well, get strong and heal!
  8. When our physical therapy team recommends you schedule an additional targeted massage as an add-on treatment, it may not feel like the nice relaxing massage you are accustomed to with our massage therapists at AHP. Massage therapy used to aid your PT program is used to decrease tightness and tone and to improve tissue mobility of a specific muscle or group of muscles that may be very inflamed or the source of your joint pain. This more intense massage add-on can make your PT program more effective since the massage may enable you to work harder and more efficiently at your PT appointments.
  9. Your PT treatment may include chiropractic or acupuncture care - or visa verse! AHP is not a typical rehabilitation and PT treatment center. If your physical therapy treatment could benefit from either acupuncture or chiropractic care, we will advise you and make recommendations for you to meet with AHP chiropractors. After a consultation, you can determine if you would like to incorporate chiropractic and/or acupuncture into your treatment plan.
  10. "No pain, no gain" is not always true! Most of the time, the treatments and exercises our experienced physical therapy team at AHP give you either in our office or to do at home should be relatively pain-free. If you are feeling pain during your PT sessions at AHP or at home, tell our physical therapists, they care and what you to get the best care possible.
